Earnings & Compensation

The salaries of Cosmetologists depend on many factors, such as experience, ability, clientele, location and salary or lease arrangements between the professional and the salon owner.

By research compiled in the most recent 2007 NACCAS Job Demand Survey, cosmetologists have dramatically increased their earning power!
  • The average income for full-time salon employees, including tips, was approximately $18.08 per hour, or $36,360 a year
  • Salon owners averaged $24.36 per hour, or $48,720 a year
  • Due to the severe shortage of licensed salon professionals, there is ZERO UNEMPLOYMENT!
  • In 2006, 1,604,502 cosmetology professionals were employed
  • An additional 16,396 cosmetologists started their own establishments just since 1999
  • 76% of salon owners who tried to fill open salon positions in 2006 said they were not always able to find qualified and licensed applicants
  • Overall employment of cosmetologists is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2005- NACCAS surveys have documented the significant increase in the number of both salons and cosmetologists since 1999
  • There are over 312,959 professional cosmetology businesses throughout the country
  • Cosmetology career options for the future are looking beautiful!

This comprehensive study is now available on the NACCAS Web site at www.naccas.org. (click on the title)

It's a job seekers market. With an estimated $56 billion spent annually, the beauty industry needs more salon professionals than can be supplied. You can enjoy a rewarding career with increased earning potential and the ability to work flexible hours.
