Ted Gibson

Ted Gibson (stylist to stars like Ashley Greene and Anne Hathaway and hair guru on TLC's "What Not To Wear"), shares the reasons why you
shouldn't shy away from following your dreams of a career in beauty - below is part of his artical from a SEVENTEEN Magazine Blog:

Making a Difference. What I love most about beauty is its transformative nature. I can change someone's outlook with a great shampoo and massage. In my salon, I see beauty professionals changing people's lives every day, and of course on TLC's "What Not to Wear," I work with other beauty professionals to help people reinvent their appearance and change their life every week.

Earning and Compensation Opportunities

Salaries of cosmetologists depend on a number of factors such as, experience, ability, clientele, location and salary or lease arrangements between the professional and the salon owner.  It sometimes takes a long time for a newly licensed cosmetology professional to build a clientele.  This profession takes time, dedication and hard work.

  • Visit the most recent national Job Demand Survey results, posted by the National Accrediting Commission of Cosmetology Arts and Science at: www.naccas.org (scroll down to Oregon to get a pdf of the results)
  • Oregon wage and projections data can be found by going to www.qualityinfo.org, and clicking on the “Occupational Info Center” tab.
  • Research  careers and the need for various occupations in the Occupational Outlook Handbook at www.bls.gov/oco

Physical Demands of the Industry

A cosmetologist must have good hand eye coordination and be able to stand for long periods of time with limited leg movement.  Nail Technologists and Estheticians require good finger dexterity and coordination, as well as have the ability to sit for long periods of time.  All cosmetology professionals must be able to work long hours while building a clientele, enjoy working with the public and be able to follow directions.  Developing the skills necessary to operate their own business is a crucial element in establishing a successful career.  There are numerous physical and mental conditions that may limit the ability of an individual to overcome the demands of the industry.  It is recommended that all persons consult with a physician in order to properly assess their mental and physical motivation, stamina and endurance prior to pursuing a career in the field of cosmetology.  (The US Department of Labor states, “Good health and stamina are important because these workers are on their feet for most of their shift. Because prolonged exposure to some hair and nail chemicals may cause irritation, special care is taken to use protective clothing, such as plastic gloves or aprons.  Most full-time barbers, cosmetologists, and other personal appearance workers put in a 40-hour week, but longer hours are common in this occupation, especially among self-employed workers. Work schedules may include evenings and weekends, when beauty salons and barbershops are busiest. Barbers and cosmetologists generally are busiest on weekends and during lunch and evening hours, therefore they arrange to take breaks during less popular times.”)

Employment Assistance

Phagans’ does not make any guarantees of employment or salary upon graduation.  However, we do solicit feedback from our graduates and employers of our graduates in regards to the material in our practical, theoretical and business curriculum.  The college will provide placement assistance, which will consist of identifying employment opportunities.  There is a Bulletin Board available at each college where Job/Employment opportunities are posted.  We have a thorough Career Development program which includes classes in completing a job application, professional appearance guidelines, preparing for a job interview, and instructions on how to write a resume and cover letter.  The program also includes training in clientele building, customer service, money management, marketing, business planning and many other valuable business tools.

Salon Visit Activities affords students the opportunity to visit salons during their training.
A designated number of hours and visit activities are required for each level.
